How to start competitive swimming as an adult in Chennai?
I learned swimming as a kid but only freestyle. I'm 26 now and want to get into competitive swimming – master's swimming events specifically. I can do 25m freestyle comfortably but my technique is probably terrible (self-taught). What's the best way to get proper coaching in Chennai, learn all four strokes, and eventually compete in master's events? How long realistically before I can compete in a 200m IM?

I started competitive swimming at 24 and competed in my first master's event at 26, so I can give you a realistic timeline: **Where to train in Chennai:** 1. **Velachery Aquatic Complex** – Olympic-size pool, excellent coaches for adults. Coach Suresh there specialises in adult competitive training. ₹3500/month for 5 days/week morning batch (5:30-7 AM). 2. **MRC Nagar Swimming Pool** – Semi-Olympic pool with dedicated master's training batch. They have a structured programme from beginner to competitive level. 3. **Presidency Club, Egmore** – Smaller pool but the coaching quality is outstanding. Great for technique work. **Realistic Timeline for 200m IM:** - **Months 1-3:** Fix your freestyle technique (breathing, bilateral breathing, flip turns). Learn backstroke. You'll swim about 1500-2000m per session. - **Months 4-6:** Learn breaststroke and basic butterfly kick. Start doing mixed stroke sets. Session volume goes to 2500-3000m. - **Months 7-9:** Refine butterfly (the hardest stroke). Practice transitions between strokes. Time trials in training. - **Months 10-12:** Competition-specific training. Practice 200m IM repeatedly. Work on dive starts. So realistically, **10-12 months** before you can compete in 200m IM at a master's event. You won't win medals initially but completing the event is the goal. **Chennai Master's Swimming:** Join the **Tamil Nadu Master's Swimming Association**. They organise 3-4 state-level meets per year. Entry is very welcoming – they have age categories from 25-29 all the way to 80+. Registration is usually ₹500 per event. **Essential gear:** - Good jammers (Speedo or Arena, not board shorts!) – ₹1500-2500 - Training fins (Finis or Decathlon brand) – ₹800-1200 - Pull buoy – ₹500 - Swim cap and anti-fog goggles – ₹800 total

Great advice above! I'll add one thing specifically for Chennai – take advantage of the **open water swimming** scene. Chennai has a growing open-water community that swims at Marina Beach and Elliot's Beach on weekend mornings. Once your pool swimming is solid (maybe after 6 months), try open water – it's a completely different experience and there are master's events specifically for open water too. The **Chennai Open Water Swimming Society** meets every Sunday at 6 AM at Elliot's Beach. Safety kayakers accompany every swim. It's free to join and the community is incredible – mix of triathletes, master's swimmers, and recreational swimmers. Also, download the **MySwimPro** app – it has structured workout plans you can follow in the pool. The free version is good enough for beginners.
