Best cycling routes near Pune for weekend rides?
I recently bought a road bike (Triban RC520 from Decathlon) and I'm looking for good cycling routes around Pune for 40-80 km weekend rides. I've been cycling only within the city so far and I want to explore the outskirts and nearby ghats. I'm comfortable on flat roads and mild inclines but haven't done any serious climbing yet. Safety is a concern too – which routes have less truck traffic? Any cycling group I can join for weekend rides?

Pune is a cycling paradise! The Triban RC520 is an excellent bike for these routes. Here are my favourite rides ranked by difficulty: **Beginner-Friendly (40-50 km, mostly flat):** 1. **Pune to Saswad and back** – Total 50 km. Beautiful countryside road. Light traffic after you cross the city limits. Flat terrain with gentle rollers. Perfect first ride outside the city. 2. **Khadakwasla Dam Loop** – 40 km round trip from Sinhagad Road. Scenic dam views, light traffic, good road surface. Stop at the dam for chai and bun maska! **Intermediate (50-70 km, some climbing):** 3. **Pune to Panshet Dam** – 65 km round trip. Moderate climbing for the last 10 km. The descent rewards you with stunning views of the Western Ghats. Road is narrow in sections so be careful. 4. **Pune to Lavasa** – "Gateway Loop" if you don't go into Lavasa city. About 70 km round trip. The climb is challenging but the road quality is excellent (private road, no trucks!). Best done early morning. **Advanced (70-100 km, serious climbing):** 5. **Sinhagad Fort Climb** – Only 35 km round trip BUT the last 5 km climb is brutal (8-12% gradient). This is the ultimate Pune cycling challenge. Every cyclist in Pune measures themselves by their Sinhagad time. **Safety Tips:** - Always ride before 9 AM. After that, truck traffic increases significantly on all routes. - Wear a helmet (obvious but many Pune cyclists skip it!). - Install a rear blinky light even during day rides. - Carry at least 2 water bottles and ₹500 cash for emergencies. - Share your live location with someone via WhatsApp. **Cycling Groups:** - **Pune Cycling Club (PCC)** – Largest group, 2000+ members. Sunday rides at 5:30 AM from various start points. Very welcoming to newcomers. - **BRM Pune (Audax)** – For when you get serious about long-distance cycling. They organise brevets (200-600 km events). - Check the Sportiplay Cycling community for Pune – people post weekend ride plans every Thursday.

Vikram covered the routes perfectly. I want to add some practical cycling tips for Pune: **Road surface warning:** The road to Panshet has some terrible patches after monsoon. Check the Pune cycling WhatsApp groups for current road condition updates before heading out. **Nutrition:** For rides over 50 km, carry energy bars or dates with you. Many shops on rural routes close on Sundays so don't rely on finding food. I bonked (ran out of energy) on my first Lavasa ride because I only carried water! **Bike maintenance:** After every monsoon season ride, clean and lube your chain. Pune roads in monsoon deposit a LOT of grit. The RC520 chain will last much longer if you maintain it. Decathlon Wakad has a free basic servicing programme for bikes bought there. **Strava:** Create a Strava account and follow Pune cyclists. You'll discover dozens of routes and can see elevation profiles before attempting them. The Sinhagad segment on Strava has over 10,000 attempts – great to track your improvement over time!
