How to improve my off-spin bowling on Indian pitches?
I'm a 22-year-old club level cricketer from Chennai and I bowl off-spin. I can turn the ball decently on dusty tracks but on flat pitches I get hammered. My coach says I need to develop more flight and dip but I'm not sure how to practice that specifically. I bowl about 3-4 overs in net sessions twice a week. What drills can I do to get more revolutions on the ball and develop a better arm ball? I've watched some Ashwin masterclasses on YouTube but I want practical tips from players who've actually worked on this.

I've been an off-spinner for 10 years at club and district level. Here's what actually worked for me: **For more revolutions:** - Practice spinning the ball from hand to hand while watching TV or sitting idle. Sounds silly but it builds finger strength over weeks. - Bowl with a **heavier ball** (use a hockey ball) during some net sessions. When you switch back to a cricket ball, the revs increase noticeably. - Focus on **flicking your index finger** at the point of release, not your wrist. The index finger does 70% of the work in off-spin. **For flight and dip:** - Bowl from a **higher release point**. Try releasing the ball when your arm is at its highest above your head. This creates a natural loop. - Reduce your pace by 10-15 km/h deliberately. Flight is about giving the ball time in the air while still having enough spin to beat the bat. - Practice bowling with a **target cone** placed 2 metres in front of where you want the ball to land. This forces you to toss it up. **For the arm ball:** - Hold the seam slightly across (like a seam bowler). Keep your action identical to your stock ball but don't roll your fingers over the ball. Let it come out with the seam pointing towards slip. - The key is that the batsman shouldn't be able to pick it from your action. Practice in front of a mirror. **Indian pitch tip:** On flat decks, bowl a tight off-stump line and use the crease. Bowl from wide of the crease for your stock ball and come close to the stumps for the arm ball. Varying the angle is more effective than trying to spin it square on unresponsive pitches.

Great tips above! I'll add one thing that helped me personally – **bowl at a single stump** during practice. Remove the other two stumps and just aim at the off stump. This forces precision and you'll naturally develop tighter lines. Also, try to watch slow-motion videos of R Ashwin's wrist position at the point of release. The way he cocks his wrist back and snaps through is the gold standard for Indian conditions. One more drill – bowl continuously for 30 minutes without a break once a week. Endurance in spin bowling is underrated and it helps you maintain your action when you're tired in the 3rd or 4th spell.
