How to improve shooting consistency in basketball?
I play shooting guard position in a recreational basketball league in Pune. My three-point shooting is wildly inconsistent – some games I hit 5/8 and other games I go 1/10. My form feels the same to me but clearly something changes. I practice about 100 shots after each game but I'm not seeing improvement in-game consistency. What should I change in my practice routine? Should I be doing something differently than just standing and shooting?

The problem is almost certainly your practice method, not your form. Standing and shooting 100 jumpers is **not game-like practice**. In a game, you never stand still, set your feet perfectly, and shoot calmly. You're always moving, catching passes, and shooting under pressure. Here's how to fix this: **1. Practice off-the-catch shooting:** Have someone pass you the ball. Catch, feet set, shoot. This mimics 80% of game situations. Do 50 shots this way – 10 from each of 5 spots around the arc. **2. Practice off-the-dribble shooting:** Dribble to a spot, pull up, shoot. Do 30 of these per session. This builds the muscle memory for the other 20% of game situations. **3. Practice with fatigue:** Do 5 sprints (baseline to half-court), then immediately shoot 5 three-pointers. Rest 30 seconds. Repeat 5 times. Your inconsistency in games likely comes from fatigue that you don't experience in relaxed practice. **4. BEEF method check:** Even though your form "feels the same," film yourself from the side: - **B**alance: Are your feet shoulder-width apart and slightly staggered every time? - **E**yes: Are you looking at the front of the rim (not the backboard)? - **E**lbow: Is your shooting elbow directly under the ball, not flared out? - **F**ollow through: Does your hand go into a "gooseneck" position and hold it until the ball hits the rim? **5. The 2-2-2 warm-up:** Before games, do this exact routine: - 2 minutes: Layups (left and right) - 2 minutes: Mid-range jump shots - 2 minutes: Three-pointers from your favourite spots This warms up your shooting touch progressively. **6. Mental consistency:** Use the SAME pre-shot routine every single time. Mine is: receive ball → one dribble → look at rim → breathe → shoot. Having a consistent routine triggers muscle memory even when you're nervous or tired.

Rohan's practice methodology is excellent. I want to add something about **shot selection** which dramatically improves perceived consistency: **Stop taking bad shots.** Review your 1/10 games honestly. Were all 10 shots open looks? Probably not. You were likely forcing contested shots or shooting off-balance. In your next game, only take shots where: 1. Your feet are set 2. No defender is within arm's length 3. You're in a spot you've practiced from This might mean you only take 5-6 threes instead of 10, but if you hit 3/5 instead of 1/10, your team benefits way more. **Shot tracking:** Keep a note in your phone after each game. Write down: total three-point attempts, makes, and how many were "good shots" vs "forced shots." After 5 games, you'll see a pattern – your consistency on good shots is probably already 40-50%. You just need to eliminate the bad attempts. Also, in Pune, the **Deccan Gymkhana basketball courts** have a shooting machine that feeds you balls automatically. ₹200 per hour. This lets you take 300+ game-like shots in an hour because you're not chasing rebounds. It's the most efficient shooting practice you can get.
