  • Vary your strokes regularly during training rather than relying solely on the breaststroke.
  • Periodically exclude the whip kick from your sets to give your knee ligaments time to recover.

Neck Strain and Stroke Mechanics

Neck pain in swimmers is almost always a direct result of incorrect breathing techniques and poor alignment.
Many swimmers incorrectly lift their heads to breathe, which hyperextends the cervical spine and causes acute muscle strain. Others over-rotate their neck instead of using their body's natural roll.
Protect your spine by refining your swimming technique:
  • During freestyle, keep your head aligned with your spine and your eyes looking directly down at the pool floor.
  • Rotate your entire body along its longitudinal axis to breathe, rather than twisting your neck.
  • Keep your head in a neutral, downward-looking position during the breaststroke and butterfly.
  • When swimming backstroke, increase your yardage gradually (no more than 10% every 4 weeks) to allow your anterior neck muscles time to adapt.
