ISL 2026-27: Start Date, Format and What Changed
Indian club football is getting its proper season back.
After a 2025-26 campaign that was compressed into barely three months, the Indian Super League is scheduled to return to a full-length season in 2026-27 — roughly seven months of football rather than a sprint.
Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and what the change actually means.
ISL 2026-27 Start Date and Season Window
| Detail | |
|---|---|
| Season starts | 1 September 2026 |
| Season ends | 11 April 2027 |
| Length | Roughly seven months |
| Source | AIFF tentative 2026-27 Indian football calendar |
The word doing the work there is tentative. This is the All India Football Federation's planning calendar, not a published fixture list. The window is the reliable part; specific dates within it can and probably will move.
[!IMPORTANT] Do not book travel on these dates yet. A tentative federation calendar sets the season boundaries so clubs can plan pre-season, contracts and AFC commitments. Matchday fixtures are released separately and later. Treat 1 September as "the season opens around here", not as a confirmed opening-day kickoff.
What Changed From Last Season
The contrast with 2025-26 is the entire story.
Last season was truncated. The 12th edition did not begin until 14 February 2026 and finished in May — a compressed campaign forced by the off-field uncertainty that surrounded Indian football through 2025. It expanded to 14 teams and ran a single-leg round-robin, with each side playing just 13 league matches.
A single-leg format is a significant compromise. It means you never play the same opponent home and away, so the fixture list is inherently unequal — whether you got a title rival at home or away is decided by the draw rather than earned. For a league trying to build local rivalries and reliable home attendances, playing each opponent once is close to the worst available format.
2026-27 restores the length. Seven months from September to April is the shape a domestic league is supposed to have, and it aligns the ISL with the AFC competition calendar and the international window structure rather than fighting them.
Why a Seven-Month Season Matters
This is more consequential than a scheduling footnote.
- More matches per club. A longer window is what makes a home-and-away format possible again. That roughly doubles the fixture count and makes the table a fairer reflection of the season.
- Squad building becomes rational. Clubs cannot justify depth, youth development or long contracts around a 13-match sprint. A full season changes what a squad is for.
- Player fitness and load. Compressed seasons stack matches dangerously close together. Spreading the same football across seven months is straightforwardly better for the people playing it.
- Broadcast and sponsorship stability. Rights deals and sponsorships are priced on inventory and predictability. A short, uncertain season is worth far less than a long, scheduled one — and that revenue is what funds academies.
- The grassroots signal. This is the part that gets overlooked. A visible, season-long domestic league is the single biggest driver of kids and adults picking the sport up locally. Truncated seasons break that pipeline.
What Is Still Unconfirmed
Being straight about the gaps, because a lot of coverage will not be:
- The fixture list. Not released at the time of writing.
- The final team list. Whether 2026-27 keeps the expanded field, and how promotion from the I-League feeds in, is not settled.
- The format. A seven-month window makes a double round-robin possible, but a return to home-and-away has not been formally confirmed.
- Broadcast arrangements. Rights for the new cycle have not been announced.
We will update this page as each is confirmed. If you want the detail before the fixture list lands, the AIFF calendar is the primary source worth watching — most early reporting is downstream of it.
Watching Is Not the Same as Playing
Every ISL season produces the same pattern: a spike of people who watch a few matches, decide they want to play, and then discover that finding a game as an adult in India is genuinely harder than it should be.
Turf venues rent you a surface, not nine other players. The actual bottleneck is people — a group with a fixed slot that is short one this week.

ISL 2026-27 FAQs
When does the ISL 2026-27 season start?
The AIFF's tentative calendar has the season running from 1 September 2026 to 11 April 2027. The exact opening fixture has not been confirmed.
How long is the ISL 2026-27 season?
Around seven months, a return to a full-length campaign after the 2025-26 season was compressed into roughly three months from February to May 2026.
Why was the 2025-26 ISL season so short?
It began late, on 14 February 2026, because of the off-field uncertainty around Indian football during 2025. The shortened window forced a single-leg format in which each of the 14 teams played only 13 league matches.
Will the ISL return to a home-and-away format?
A seven-month season makes a double round-robin viable again, but this has not been formally confirmed. Watch for the fixture release.
How many teams are in the ISL?
The 2025-26 edition ran with 14 teams, including sides promoted from the I-League. Whether 2026-27 keeps that number is not yet confirmed.
Where can I watch the ISL 2026-27 season?
Broadcast arrangements for the new cycle have not been announced at the time of writing.
A full season back on the calendar is the best news Indian club football has
had in two years. The fixtures will follow — and the nearest game to you is
not on television anyway.
