Improve Badminton Serve: 4 Proven Drills [Step-by-Step]

Why Your Serve Dictates the Entire Rally

Want to dominate your matches? To improve badminton serve accuracy, you must move beyond basic rallies and master targeted serving drills.
Most recreational players hit a plateau because they neglect this critical opening shot. The serve is the only moment in a badminton match where you have complete control over the shuttlecock.
A weak, high serve gives your opponent an immediate attacking advantage. By refining your technique, you force weak returns and control the pace of the game.

Set Up Your Court for Effective Practice

To master consistent serving, you need a dedicated environment free of distractions. Trying to practice during active matches will only stunt your progress.
Find an empty badminton court where you can focus entirely on your mechanics. Repetition is the absolute key to building muscle memory.
Bring at least 20 to 30 shuttlecocks to your practice session. This ensures you spend your time serving rather than constantly chasing single shuttles across the court.

The Racket-Gap Drill for Low Short Serves

A flawless short serve must skim directly over the net tape and land right at the opponent's short service line. Keeping the trajectory low prevents your opponent from executing a deadly net kill.
To practice this, have a partner stand opposite you and hold their racket horizontally, parallel to and just above the net tape. This creates a narrow visual window.
Practice hitting your backhand serve or forehand serve directly through this gap. As you improve, have your partner lower the racket closer to the net to make the target even tighter.

The Deep Target Drill for High Long Serves

The long serve is designed to push your opponent to the very back of the court. It must fly high and fall almost vertically near the baseline.
For this drill, have your partner stand near the back boundary line of the opposite court with their racket raised high. Your goal is to serve the shuttlecock clean over their racket.
The shuttle must drop steeply between the long service line and the baseline. Consistently hitting this deep zone prevents aggressive, mid-court smashes.

How to Stay Motivated During Serve Practice

Repetitive serving drills can become tedious, which often leads to sloppy form. To prevent mental fatigue, limit your dedicated serving practice to 15 minutes per session.
Turn your practice into a game by tracking your success rate out of 20 serves. Compete against your personal bests to keep the training sessions engaging.
Remember, a flawless serve is the ultimate weapon. Dedicating just a few minutes of focused training every week will rapidly elevate your overall game.
Improving your serve is the fastest way to level up your badminton game. By practicing the racket-gap drill for short serves and the deep target drill for long serves, you will keep your opponents on the defensive. Grab a bucket of shuttles, head to the court, and start practicing today!
