Is padel or pickleball better for a complete beginner in India?
Both padel and pickleball seem to be opening up everywhere in Indian cities right now and I keep seeing both mentioned together. I've never played either and want to try one seriously rather than both half-heartedly. Which is actually easier to pick up as a complete beginner with no racket sport background?

Pickleball is generally the easier starting point for a true beginner with no racket sport background. The court is smaller, the paddle is simple to control, the ball is slower than a padel ball, and the core rules are quick to explain and pick up within a single session. Most people are rallying competently within their first hour on court. Padel has a slightly steeper learning curve because of the enclosed glass and mesh walls - using the walls well is a real skill that takes time to develop, and until you learn it, points can feel chaotic rather than strategic. That said, padel is genuinely one of the fastest-growing sports in India right now, with courts opening rapidly across most metro cities, so availability is improving fast even if the skill ceiling to enjoy it fully is a bit higher. Practically: if you want to feel competent quickly and enjoy your first few sessions, start with pickleball. If you're drawn to padel specifically, it's absolutely worth trying, just expect the first few sessions to be more about learning wall angles than winning points. Neither requires you to buy expensive gear to try for the first time; most venues for both sports rent paddles for a first session.
